Reflections Following Commencement: Imparting Thoughts for the Class of 2025

Marshall University president Brad D. Smith congratulates a graduating student at the 2025 spring commencement ceremony.

On May 10, 2025, Marshall University hosted its 188th Commencement Exercises at the Marshall Health Network Arena in Huntington, West Virginia. As I stood on stage watching our nearly 1,500 newest graduates cross with pride, I was struck once again by the power of education, not just to inform, but to transform.

From the early check-ins at the arena’s corridors to the final notes of our “Alma Mater,” the day was steeped in both tradition and momentum. The ceremony celebrated students from the College of Health Professions, the School of Pharmacy, the College of Arts and Media, the College of Liberal Arts, and the Regents Bachelor of Arts program. Families filled the arena in a sea of celebration and livestreaming brought the experience home for those joining from afar.

As I shared in a recent post:

“This past weekend’s commencement ceremony filled me with pride and excitement for all of the students who celebrated their academic accomplishments. I can’t wait to see how you all use your newly acquired skills to build a better future.”

And I meant every word.

You’ve Been Preparing for This Far Longer Than You Know

Back in March, we marked our “Countdown to Commencement” — a time of preparation, reflection, and celebration. You gathered in the Don Morris Room to decorate caps, pick up cords, write thank-you notes, and capture portraits in your regalia. You visited the Registrar’s Office, the Alumni Association, and the Office of Career Education — each interaction building toward the moment you’d walk across the stage.

As I said then: “The countdown to commencement represents more than the culmination of academic efforts; it is the start of a new chapter filled with opportunity.”

This weekend, that chapter began.

Tradition Meets Transformation

Led by the Chief Marshal bearing the Grand Mace, we witnessed the formal processional, the conferring of degrees, and your individual recognition. Some of you wore academic hoods. Others wore honor cords. Some wore red, white, and blue cords in recognition of military service. Each one of you walked with your own story.

Photographers captured the moment, but what’s more important is what you carry with you. Because while diplomas will arrive in your inboxes and mailboxes in the coming weeks, what lasts far longer are the lessons you’ve learned here at Marshall — resilience, purpose, and the value of community.

What Comes Next Is Just As Important

Some of you will pursue graduate degrees. Some will begin their careers. Others may launch businesses, join the military, or move into public service. No matter what path you take, I encourage you to lead with purpose.

For those who plan to build a future right here in West Virginia, I want you to know we’re investing in you. Through programs like First Ascent, a two-year fellowship launched in collaboration with West Virginia University, we’re working to ensure our graduates have the tools, mentorship, and career opportunities to thrive in the Mountain State and beyond.

You Will Always Be a Part of Marshall

Whether you’ve moved your tassel or are still waiting on your diploma, you are now and forever part of the Herd. Our support doesn’t end at graduation. We’ll continue cheering you on through the Alumni Association, through mentorship, and through every connection you choose to keep.

Congratulations, Class of 2025. You’ve earned more than a degree — you’ve earned a future filled with possibility.

Go Herd. Go far.
